What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a system of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions and non-musculoskeletal conditions. This includes neck pain, back pain and other joint conditions. Osteopaths use a whole-body approach to treatment and diagnosis, and sometimes the problem may be further afield than the site of pain.
Osteopaths are regulated health professionals by the General Osteopathic Council and recognized as Allied Health Professionals in the UK. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques that can include joint mobilization, manipulation, exercise, and lifestyle advice to assist you in your recovery.
What does my first appointment look like?
Your first appointment will be 60 minutes and cover a comprehensive medical history and discussion about your presenting condition. A physical assessment will be undertaken which can involve movements, postural assessments, and clinical testing to assist with your diagnosis.
Your Osteopath will then explain to you the options for treatment and present to you that they have found. Each treatment will be different from the next and will use a variety of manual techniques to aid treatment of your condition. Exercise may be prescribed to allow strengthening of muscles to assist with your recovery.
Osteopaths can also assist with other lifestyle advice and can aid you in partnership with other health professionals to assist you in your journey. If required, your Osteopath will also refer you for further testing to assist your health.
