Get active, Stay active
Physical activity, whether in the gym or outdoor activity, is important in staying healthy regardless of your age. Rory recently discussed physical activity with Radio News Hub about the benefits of staying physically active later on in life. The beauty of physical activity is that you can start at anytime and you will see a benefit. Exercise is a key part of what our bodies are engineered to do, and although exercise is typically seen in physiotherapy settings, Osteopathy often utilises exercise in treatment and prevention of dysfunction and dis-ease. This can be traced back to writings from John Martin Littlejohn, an instrumental key player in early Osteopathy.
“We must not forget that active exercise forces deeper breathing and this reanimates and replenishes the tissues with fresh life through freely oxygenated
blood……The object is to prescribe as regulated exercise what will most
nearly establish an adjustment of motion and locomotion in a particular patient
along normal lines.” - John Martin Littlejohn, Principles of Osteopathy, page. 97.
Any physcial activity has a range of benefits, and it is important that the exercise is enjoyable and can be done consistently. Whether your goal is to improve your balance, reduce pain, or look after yourself, Exercise has a place in your life. Your Osteopaths will help assist you in finding the right exercise for you.
